Living well with Inflammatory Bowel disease

The effects of inflammatory bowel disease are more than just physical and can have significant impact on quality of life. Living with any long-term health condition is difficult, however, patients can minimise its impact on their daily life by leading a healthy lifestyle. Taking medication can help control inflammatory bowel disease but taking care of physical and emotional wellbeing by doing plenty of exercise and by eating a well-balanced diet can lessen the impact of inflammatory bowel disease and help patients lead a fulfilling life.

Some tips and suggestions to consider when managing inflammatory bowel disease on a daily basis:

  • Involving family and friends – A lot of people feel embarrassed about having inflammatory bowel disease but it is important to understand that it is a medical condition and nothing to feel bad about
  • Social life – Maintain a social life to prevent feeling isolated from friends and family
  • Playing sport – Exercise as much as possible as it is great for relieving stress and enhancing mental health
  • Food and nutrition – Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet from all food groups, as good nutrition is essential to the healing process.

Rhoma was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and has been taking a biologic since 2006. She had tried many medications but, with these, had observed very little improvement in her condition and struggled to lead a fulfilling life. She felt that her condition was in control of her body and her life…until she started treatment with a biologic. The difference she felt after her first treatment she describes as “flicking a switch ...it was darkness into light.”

This is Rhoma’s story. Rhoma is an actual patient with moderate to severe inflammatory bowel disease for whom a biologic has worked well. The views expressed in this video are the patient’s own. It is likely that disease severity and treatment results will vary from person to person. Some patients may never experience the symptoms described in this video.

Before Ryan started taking a biologic, he had almost given up on moving forward with his life. Medications he had tried for his ulcerative colitis did not work well for him…until his first treatment with a biologic, which turned his life around.
