What can you do about your thoughts?

Sometimes, when we accept things as they are, it can make things a bit easier. This might sound a bit rough when we have a disease we don’t really want, but accepting our unpleasant thoughts and feelings may make us feel better.

Imagine you are stuck in quicksand, and you start struggling to get out. But the more you struggle, the deeper you sink. However, if you relax and remain calm, your body stays on the surface and you can slowly crawl away. It is a bit like this with our thoughts and feelings of living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – the more we struggle with them, the more trouble they can be in the long-term.

Accepting unpleasant thoughts or feelings doesn’t mean you have to like them. It is more about just allowing them to be there and focusing on getting better.
